FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OUTREACH 

First Presbyterian Day School--Our Day School provides high quality day care for approximately 65 infants and pre-school children from many social, racial, and economic backgrounds.  The staff offers a carefully planned educational program for each age group served.  The Day School is overseen by its own board of directors and receives financial and volunteer support from our congregation.   For more information, call Katharine Smith at 688-8685.

  Habitat for Humanity--  Serving as volunteer coordinator, land developer, construction company, lender, and fundraising organization, Habitat for Humanity makes home ownership possible for families whose incomes would otherwise not allow them to buy a home.  Creating partnerships between volunteers and low-income families, Habitat builds affordable housing throughout the community and provides ongoing support for the homeowners.  For more information, contact Maria Keeler, at 682-0516, ext. 112.

  Genesis Home-- Located just a few blocks from First Presbyterian, this home provides a safe place to live and a supportive program for homeless families and young women in transition to more stable lives.  The residents and staff work together to overcome the root causes of homelessness and to allow the residents to develop essential life skills.  Just recently, Genesis Home launched a program known as Turning Point, which provides case management support to formerly homeless families in five local apartments.  For more information, contact Nicole Manley at 683-5878.

  Urban Ministries of Durham — UMD operates the Community Shelter just to the east of First Presbyterian with 80 beds for men, 26 for women, and 9 rooms, each with a private bath, for families. In emergency situations the shelter can house up to 175 people. Addiction recovery programs for both men and women are offered through the Community Shelter, serving up to thirty men and ten women at any one time.  For more information, contact Lloyd Schmeidler at 682-0538 ext. 27.

  Durham Congregations in Action— Rather than providing direct services, DCIA works to bring together faith congregations to promote understanding across boundaries of faith, race, and ethnicity.  Currently, DCIA is helping to launch YO:Durham, an initiative focused on at-risk teens.  YO:Durham will offer a summer training program to develop leadership and life skills, followed by internships for participants with local employers to reinforce job skills and behavior.  For more information, call David Winer at 688-2036.

   Housing for New Hope--  This umbrella organization is devoted to preventing and ending homelessness.  HNH operates the following programs: 

• Presbyterian Urban Ministry, whichprovides emergency assistance for single-headed household, the disabled, and the elderly living in povery.

• Programs Assisting in Transition from Homelessness (PATH), which provides outreach to chronically homeless individuals with mental health issues.

• Phoenix and Dove Houses, which provide transitional housing and services for single, homeless men and women.

• Sherwood Park & Andover Apartments, which offer permanent housing and ongoing social support for formerly homeless men and women.

  Emmanuel Hispanic Presbyterian Fellowship – Serving the Hispanic community, this fellowship offers Presbyterian worship services, Christian education, leadership training, pastoral care, educational workshops, support groups for struggling students, low-cost music lessons, summer soccer camp, youth group, community leadership, and advocacy.  The fellowship is supported by a number of local Presbyterian congregations as well as the Presbytery of New Hope, and is located at Northgate Presbyterian.  For more information, contact Rev.   Presbyterian Campus Ministry at Duke University – Offering Duke students opportunities for fellowship, worship, study, reflection, service, and fun,  the campus ministry’s goal is to bear witness to Jesus’s gospel in the reformed tradition of the PCUSA and UCC denomination.  The many programs and pastoral work of the ministry directly touch more than 400 persons both on and off the Duke campus.  For more information, contact Rev.   FPC Mission trips – First Presbyterian is supporting at least two mission trips per year.  Most recently, the trips have been to the Gulf Coast region to help with the Katrina rebuilding effort.  Planned by the Service & Mission Committee, the trips allow a group of church members to engage in a week-long, intensive mission activity.  An international trip is currently under consideration by the Committee.  For more information, contact Tyler Momsen-Hudson at 732-9595.
