Ways to Get Involved: Committees

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE

This active committee focuses on fostering fellowship amongst members, visitors and friends of First Pres. For us, fellowship includes recreational times together as well as times of deeper connection as a Christian community. Our work includes special event planning such as Stewardship Luncheons, Pop-ups, the Fellowship Fair, and organizing small groups such as the Dinner Groups and Bible Studies. For more information, contact Rev. Esther Hethcox, [email protected]

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The CE committee seeks to help all FPCers and newcomers to grow in their faith, during the education hour on Sunday mornings and at other times. In particular, this looks like recruiting faith formation teachers, planning classes and events (both age-specific and intergenerational), and supporting all those who actively live out their baptismal promises to raise all of God’s children in the Christian faith. For more information, contact Lenore Champion, [email protected] or John Weicher, [email protected].

YOUTH MINISTRY COMMITTEE

The YMC tends to all of the big-picture ministries for and with FPC youth, their families, and visitors & newcomers. This can include everything from selecting summer mission trip agencies to managing FPC merchandise fundraisers to nominating adults who might be good advisors or teachers. Chaired by a member of session who is also a high schooler, the committee is made up of youth and parents/stepparents/adult volunteers, as well as the Associate Pastor for Youth and Their Families, Rev. John Weicher. Contact John for more information, [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

Invites members to share their time, talent, and treasures to support the faithful following of Jesus Christ in our church community and beyond. For more information contact Jon Abels, [email protected]

SERVICE AND MISSION COMMITTEE

The Service and Mission Committee provides financial and volunteer support and leadership for a number of critical local charities. Your donations and volunteer time support the FPC Day School, Urban Ministries, Iglesia Emanuel, our Walk-In Ministry, our Afghan refugee support, and many other worthy organizations. Our committee determines the best way to allocate your generous donations and organizes volunteers to help support congregational efforts like rice & bean bagging for Iglesia, the FPC Red cross blood drive, racial equity events and Habitat builds. For more information, contact, Gordon Campbell, [email protected].

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

The Membership Committee seeks to live out Christ's hospitality to all who pass through our doors. This group is a sub-committee of the Diaconate and strives to welcome and make meaningful connections with visitors. It is not a committee which only meets to assign tasks, but to gather together to dream and make welcoming a reality for all. Your joy and energy are welcomed in the roles of being greeters on Sunday mornings, an Initial Friend who reaches out to new worshippers, or working with outreach to increase our presence in the wider community. For more information, contact Elizabeth Jones at [email protected] or Rev. Esther Hethcox at e.hethcox@firstpres- durham.org.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE

If you are looking for a way to be more involved at FPC, but prefer to be “behind the scenes”, consider joining the Worship and the Arts Committee! The Committee meets virtually once a month to make sure that everything is in order for communion preparation and to assist the church staff in matters related to worship services. We would love to add new members to our devoted group. For more information contact Alice Raney [email protected] and Julie Whiddon at [email protected].
